I am blessed to be surrounded by high achievers and amazing role models such as Tom Hamlin, Lincoln Collins, Wade Dokken and Sean Browne not to mention many of my own personal Getting Results Coaching clients.
I believe that God, The Universe or whatever higher power that you believe in wants us all to evolve to our highest level. That evolution is unique to each of us but the universe wants us to evolve because it is in the universe’s best interest for each of us to reach our potential. If our potential is reached we have affected 100’s if not 1,000’s along the way.
Years ago a mentor said to me, “Ken, the universe is constantly presenting you opportunities to accelerate your evolution. You are just too asleep to see or hear them.” Ouch! That was a slap upside the head! That was a lesson I learned many years ago and unfortunately I still find myself occasionally napping at the wheel of business and life. I continually hear ideas and concepts that would radically improve my life and business but they go in one ear and out the other. Maybe you have found that this happens to you as well. You hear great ideas but do not implement them, or maybe you say to yourself ‘of course that works for him but that would never work for me because my situation is different’.
I submit what gets in my own way and blocks my own evolution is my ego! To be exact it’s that part of me which says, “Oh, I know that, or that’s good for him but I don’t need to do that part I need the part that works!” I failed to realize that the true strength of a building lays in the foundation not the façade. If I really knew the part that works wouldn’t I be doing it already?
I received yet another proverbial smack across the head just last week. Two months ago we started our first Wealth Tribe called Digital Marketing with Tom Hamlin. Tom has accomplished something that few human beings have ever done. He has gathered over a 100 million in assets for the last 2 or 3 years, every year! It is comparable to winning the Tour de France multiple times. It is a rarity and this guy is doing something different than any other advisor I know and I know many top producers. One of the goals of this Wealth Tribe is to help people become more like Tom. How do we the mere mortals reach his Olympus of production? What is the trick, the short cut, the technique or the formula?
I am a business coach so my model is different from Tom’s so maybe that is what started me snoozing as he shared the foundational tool of his success. When I heard the tool my ego said, “That’s cute, I know that and I have read enough books on success and a matter of fact, I have written a couple of them myself! I don’t need to read any more books. Tom, tell me the secret of your success! Give me the short cut. What is the magic formula?” In that moment, just over two months ago, the Universe provided me with an opportunity to accelerate my evolution. I had listened but I did not hear. The great danger to all of us is when we hear ourselves saying “I know that.” It is like slamming the door on learning because if you already know something why bother learning any more?
The gift that Tom offered but I refused to hear was a book he recommended. It was a book with a catch. It was a book that contained scrolls that you are supposed to read 3 times a day for 30 days. You were not to continue onto the next scroll until you reached the end of the first 30 day period. The book is called “The Greatest Salesman in the World” by Og Mandino.
When I first heard him say this, my ego screamed, “Ken you already know this stuff. You’ve been coaching these guys for the past decade on this stuff.” The book has a simple premise: It is about reconditioning the mind so that it is in a more receptive state for success and opportunity. I made the dangerous mistake of “knowing” the outcome before I started the exercise. Besides, who has the time to do that woo woo stuff anyway? I need to focus on selling. I am too busy to spend my very important time on that kind of stuff.
Every now and then I have flashes of brilliance which enlighten me to that fact that I “know” very little and its time to re-buckle down and become a student again. To be great is not about doing exactly what great men do, but rather it is about understanding how great men think and incorporate new philosophies to create tremendous success in our own lives.
Tom, thanks for the gift. I am reading each scroll now 3 times a day. I am a little late to the party but committed to the exercise. I am listening and hearing now. This simple book is affecting my mind. The exercise is paying off. I am seeing opportunities now that I could not see before. For those of you in our WealthTribe who have not committed yourselves to the exercise give up “knowing” and take on the exercise. What you feed your mind will flourish in your business!
Be peaceful,
Coach Ken
